Fashion? It still consumes too much water

It is the world’s most precious asset, indispensable to any production process. The subject is clearly water, the main theme of Watec Italy 2019, the exibition that from 23 to 26 October will catalyse international experts and researchers in Cremona to talk about a sustainable global management of water resources.

Did you know, for instance, that the fashion industry, a sector in which Italy occupies a leading place worldwide, consumes more than 79 billion cubic meters of water annually and produces 2.1 billion tons of waste? Faced with these numbers, the sector is trying to become more virtuous. Because, according to research by the McKinsey company, conducted by consulting 80 buyers from 25 countries, over the next 5 years there will be a radical trend towards “sustainable acquisitions”, which should rise from 23% to 42%.

The battles to be fought are traceability, efficient use of water resources and chemical reagents, safety and ethical work, as well as search for new sustainable materials, produced using ever less water.

An ethical challenge, but also a commercial one, given that virtuous and sustainable Italian production can have more cards to play on the global scale, stimulating the countries supplying raw materials to raise their standards and be ever closer to the demands of international buyers.
